Fourth grade students at St. Joseph Middle School have been studying ecosystems. They've been learning about their makeup and what causes them to change. To demonstrate how they work teacher Nicole Gooch had her class create terrariums which are miniature ecosystems. If properly monitored one can sustain itself for a long period of time.
The students were divided into groups and given supplies to create their terrariums. Potting soil, worms, a flower, crickets and potatoes were placed inside plastic bottles. "They also added their own personal touches such as rocks, acorns, sticks, and grass," Ms. Gooch said. These elements work together, and with a good balance of plants, soil, nutrients and water, the terrariums should thrive. The students placed them in well-lit areas and are collecting data on them for a week to see how their ecosystems develop.
