The beam is locked into place.

The beam was moved into place by a crane. A small tree and a flag were attached to the beam. That tradition goes back a long ways when placing a tree atop a new building was done to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in the construction.

Father Alfhones blessed the beam with Holy Water which had been signed by many parishioners.

Parishioner Brad Hegeman, the President of Nabholz Construction, presided over a "topping off" ceremony July 31 on the construction site of our parish's new multi-purpose building. The ceremony is a builder's rite held when the last and highest beam is placed atop a structure during its construction. Hegeman said the ceremony also honored the work of the craftsmen building it and was a testament to the safety procedures employed.

The VBS kids occasionally went outside for fun and games. Teammates Abigail Rehm and Isabel Moreno drew an Ichthus on the pavement which is a fish symbol representing Christianity.

Rob Evans, Vince Porcaro and Father Tony are teaching a lesson about parts of the Mass which is enhanced by upbeat songs that are cranked out of the Massterpiece Music Machine behind them. It was built by Richie Hambuchen and decorated by daughter Julia.

Mr Rob Evans a.k.a. The Donut Man and his puppet pal Duncan Donut were featured attractions at the Vacation Bible School which began Sunday evening and wraps tonight, July 27. It was organized by Christy Trantina, Carina Martinez, Caryn Hoyt, and Hannah Zinno. Ninety-four children in Kindergarten through 5th grade participated.

Among the honors that our cheerleaders received at the camp they attended was All-American status for four of them. Anna Claire Bailey, Carolyn Woodson, Katherine Covington, and Ella Jones achieved this award which is one of the highest one can achieve in the sport. Thousands try out for it at camps across the country each summer, but only 10 per cent are chosen.

Five incoming freshmen at St Joseph High School are taking an advanced class of Algebra I this summer with Mr Jeremy Elsinger. They're doing so to avoid having to double up later on to be eligible to take Calculus as seniors. Their previous test scores, math grades, and teacher recommendations qualified them for the course. The students are Matthew Brorman, Luke Bruich, Caleb Mallett, Eva Palmer, and John Smith. When school reconvenes, Dr Wolfe will be teaching a similar class for a select group of 8th graders so they too can get on the Calculus track without having to go to summer school.

Our Summer Art Camp wraps up today which began on June 26. Seventeen children from the 1st through 6th grades participated. High school art teacher Penny Bassham and Patricia McCauley from Pine Forest Elementary in Maumelle were the instructors. Several high school students also assisted.
